There frequently are sensors on auto-reverse decks that detect the reels turning. Lack of turning could be end-of-tape (hence the switch from side A to B as the first action) or a broken tape or a fault in the tape drive mechanism. In your case it's most likely the tape drive mechanism. I'm guessing that the most likely culprit is a broken drive belt. A very minor part that can be a devil to fix, depending on what has to come out to gain access and determining the size belt you need. About the only way to be sure is to operate.
Back in the day there used to be FM modulators that you could plug your music source into. Naturally the sound quality is limited by the modulation/demodulation stages, but if your hearing is as bad as mine has become, not a problem ;-)
