Hello, the symptoms point to either the engine coolant temperature sensor failing or the thermostat opening a bit early. The gauge in the 9-5 is not linear it works on a curve showing normal operating temperature on the gauge from almost warmed up to almost overheating and the lower and upper portion of the gauge are traveled through quickly. You should be fine driving for an hour but if the gauge goes to hot shut it down as quickly as you can safely pull over. When you get the codes checked it most likely will be p0116 or p0118. Good Luck, Bernie at George Riggin Specialty Automotive
