holy crap - that is scary! I just did this on our 1989. The holes were tiny but the rust was extensive. Awful project. But that was a 1989!!! 2001 should still be flawless. Did you ever have water intrusion? Our 1989's rust was primarily due to a leaking brake line, but also some other water collection. In the c900's there is a sponge like sound proofing layer under the carpet. The top of the sponge is rubber (a vapour barrier)... so it is a sandwich of metal (vapour barrier, sponge (water retainer), rubber (vapour barrier)... worst possible situation in terms of rust promotion... rusts from the inside out. Maybe you just had leaking around the plug (why the heck do they put those plugs in??), but I would pull carpets as much as possible to confirm!
