Just acquired an 01 9-5 aero, my tenth saab (3x99's,3x900's, 3x9000's), but first 9-5. I just jacked up the front to do an oil change, and I'm looking at the oil filter, under which is a metal rail and a plastic bottom cover. They are bone dry, yet it appears to me that if I remove the filter they would get dripped on in the process. What am I missing? Does the threaded pipe that the filter screws onto protrude far enough out so that all the oil will drop down past the metal and plastic? I did have my mechanic pull the oil pan and clean it out first thing, so maybe he just cleaned everything really well underneath, but any guidance is appreciated.
