I always start with the highest up leak (valve cover) and then go for the cheapest leaks before tackling the expensive and less common leaks.
It amazes me when a new customers comes in from another shop and they want to reseal the oil pan because it is full of oil residue from a leaking valve cover gasket, oil pressure switch or that the PCV check valve is bad allowing more oil to be pushed out by the headgasket than needed.
