It is very strange that these crimps fail. When you look the way that they were done and the effort to seal the splice, they certainly seemed to be trying to do a good job. A good crimp is considered a 'gas tight seal' as the pressures and metal deformation should keep oxygen out of the contact surfaces. The crimp pressure can be too little and QA testing would take samples and check pull out strength etc. Metal creep that relaxes crimp pressure does not occur in copper alloys at temperatures under 250F, so that is not happening.
