Centripetal force is the force that acts on an object causing circular motion. An object in motion will continue in a straight line unless it encounters another force- an acceleration towards the center of a circle (centripetal acceleration)causes the object to travel in a circular direction.
Centrifugal force is an imaginary force that is the result of the object's tendency to travel in a straight line, but is being acted upon by centripetal force.
For example- if you were to swing a mass at the end of a string, the string would provide the centripetal force, maintaining the circular motion. If the string were to break- then the mass would continue moving in a straight line (ignoring other factors like gravity and friction)tangent to the circle (or normal to the string) at the point the string broke. If you were to break the above scenario down into a free body diagram, you would see that there is no force acting on the mass other than the force provided by the string.
