So, the stock sizes are 225/45R17 or 235/45R17 and both should be fine on all the normal 9-5 rims. However, the 2 are different tire diameters. Google Miata tire calclator to see how much difference there is. IIRC, 235/45R17 corresponds well to the stock 16" size of 215/55R16 whereas 225/45R17 (the ones I use in summer) corresponds well to 205/55R16 (the ones I use in winter). Using different tire diameters will throw off your odometer and speedometer unless they are reprogrammed. The tire calculator tells you how much. The 2 pairs are within about 0.1% and 0.4%, but going between diameters is about 1.5% error. Not too bad, but slightly off.
I just had a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports removed and replaced with Bridgestone RE970. The PSS was a fantastic performing tire, but be aware that it wears very quickly. You might be looking at a different pilot model though. FWIW, the PSS is about the only michelin that comes in a high enough load rating for the 9-5 (if you care about that - many here don't).
So far (dry pavement only) I am really liking the RE970's. They compare very well to the PSS, but hopefully should last a little longer. I'm looking forward to trying them in some rain.
There will be some cost to factor in taking them off the bmw rims and putting them on your own. Sometimes that is included in a new tire purchase... but if the price is right, and the tire size is right, why not go for it?
