I looked in the workshop manual and it says remove the nut and lift off the wheel. Sounds like yours is a bit stuck. I would put the nut on loosley to protect the threads, then pull up with all of your 6'8" and have a helper tap on the nut with a hammer. Don't get too violent as they have all sorts of warnings about being too rough with the steering column. I believe this is for when the colum is out of the car.
