Yesterday afternoon we went back to where the car was sitting and I put in two gallons of gas and squirted a little starting fluid in the throttle body and it fired right up! Drove it home and it was fine. The thing is the gas gauge was not reading empty yet, the low fuel light was not on. Perhaps it's not reading accurately and was out of fuel? I know from my C900 experience that a bad pre-pump will make the car act like it's out of gas below 1/4 tank but does the 9-5 even have a pre-pump? I don't remember seeing one when I replaced the fuel pump insert a couple of years ago.
This afternoon I'm going to change the fuel filter (I think it could still be the original one) and then go top it up at the gas station and see how much fuel it takes. If it takes close to 16 gallons then it's likely that it really was empty.
