After last night's P0304 finding, looked on some YouTube sites; suggested it could be low compression, bad injector, bad wiring to DIC, bad wiring to injector, etc.... One of the sites recommended the compression test first, since it's simple and will quickly tell you to ignore other tests if it shows something bad. Did this tonight, found #4 cylinder at only 25 psi, others were 165-170 psi. put a squirt of oil in #4, no improvement which suggests to me a valve not seating.
What is interesting, is for over the last year, the car had some surges usually several times in a 20 mile drive, like a mild stumble, felt like a mass air sensor giving a hiccup. It has been into a mechanic (not a TECH 2 scanner) several times during this last year, when it did have an engine light, but no codes showed up. It was not until last night that we saw the P304. During this past year my wife thought it had some issues, but could not be found; tonight's discovery mad here mad as a hornet, since she had an feeling something has not been right.
I am really surprised how low the compression is and wonder if this has had low compression all this time, as this did not really seem to have the spunk you would expect from an Aero. Our '01 9-3 which has about the same miles, has much more getup and go.
Looks like at least a head job, probably will change out timing chain assembly and pull the pan to clean the pickup.
With 160k are there any other recommendations, assuming the cross hatch in the cylinders still look good?
