I really don't think T4 vs i6 is why these cars didn't sell better. Sure, 2.3L is a little big for a 4, but I don't have any problem with the sounds the car makes... I suppose if someone wants to drive an ultra smooth luxo-barge, the 9-5 may not be for them - go get a caddy or lincoln or big merc or whatever... but I think SAAB lost market share because GM made them do things like release a 9-3 that was completely unavailable as a hatch. I think many many former SAAB drivers throughout the north east (saab's biggest market) switched over to Subies... which are not i6's! It was the combination of GM-related factors, but the core of the 9-3 engine significantly predates GM anyway. SAABs in these parts appealed to a practical sort who also valued the better design, safety, etc (that Subies lack) to go along with the fun winter driving characterstics.
Another factor was just getting people from other brands into the dealerships. Around here a 9-3X cost just slightly more than a similarly appointed Forester or Outback after discounting... and the car drove waaay better than the Subies... but I have yet to meet anyone here who bought a Subie and even set foot in the Saab dealership. Sometimes, it's just perception, lack of knowledge, complete obliviousness... SAAB was a small brand - many people had no clue what SAAB was.
Anyway, sorry to hear you are disappointed in the 9-5. We like ours. It's not perfect, the suspension being the biggest issue (now mostly fixed with better parts), and not really as winter capable as the c900's, but otherwise it's really been a very good car so far! Sometimes it is a grass is always greener thing and kind of unfair to compare a 10 year old well used car with brand new. No wonder people buy Hyundais/Kias! Will be interesting to see how they are holding up in 10 years...
