Head retorque 2001 Aero Posted by saabsince 93b [Email] (#972) [Profile/Gallery] (more from saabsince 93b) on Wed, 29 Oct 2014 20:43:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My son Jon's 2001 Aero wagon with 81K miles on it had a small water leak.
this was just after the heater by-pass valve started leaking and was replaced with a MacKay hose set to get rid of the by-pass.
No visible leak, but the add water light would come on about once a week.
I noticed fluid just below the exhaust cam on thew driver side of the head at the gasket. I have read stuff about some heads needing re-torque from the factory so I wondered if this could be the problem.
We took off the valve cover and checked the head bolts. The front bolt driver's side was loose... not even finger tight. Next one in was maybe 10 ft lb. None of them were more than 20 of 25 ft lb.
We re-torqued all of them top 33, then 40, then 55. I have no idea if these bolts have been stretched, and not having a spare set around, we left it at this. I may get a set of ARP bolts and redo them all later.
Jon is the second owner of this very low mile 2001 and we have all the service records. From what we can tell the bolts have never been touched in 13 years.
So far the water leak seems to have be cured.
the car also had an exhaust leak in the turbo area. He found that all 3 of the bolts holding the downpipe to the turbo were loose. One was finger tight. This fixed the exhaust leak.
Funny that this car went all these years with loose head bolts. Something to check on you old 95.
