Nordman afaik used to be a low end subsidiary of Nokian - basically just a front to continue producing older tire designs, but I think in Russia. So the Nordman 5 would be the old Hakka 5 which is a great tire. You would not go wrong with those if you are trying to save a little $$ on tires. I have hakka 4's on our c900 winter beater, and that thing completely outperforms the 9-5 in snow. If you can't use studs, I would look into the Nokian R2. That is likely to be our next tire. Looks like a better tread shape than the R (which we have, and I am not that impressed by), plus it includes "grit" in the rubber for ice performance.
Gislaved also makes good tires with similar characteristics to Nokian. Many brands copy both. I think older Gislaved designs are also in production, but not sure by whom? Maybe Pirelli winter carving? Cooper? General? Not sure which or if another? Isn't Gislaved owned by Conti? So what lower end mark does conti own? I could be completely mixed up on this part so anyone feel free to set me straight!
