Long story --
I recently leased an '02 Aero. Loving the car, but it had a tendancy to drift right, so I went back to the dealership (which outsources its alignment jobs) to get it aligned.
On the alignment shop's first try, nothing changed. The car was still drifting, exactly as it originally did. The dealership stated that the alignment shop's equipment needed to be recalibrated, and we needed to try again. Okay. My guess was that the outsourced alignment shop just didn't do the work and tried to charge my dealer anyway.
On the second try, they solved the alignment problem. The car now tracks straight. But somehow, the steering is now screwed up. It almost feels as if something is loose somewhere, either in the steering or the front suspension. From time to time, this manifests itself as a very subtle dead spot in the steering (e.g. it is noticeable when backing up slowly and varying speed slightly--it almost feels as though the steering column is being tugged in and out slightly).
The problem is difficult to describe, but it's driving me crazy. It has ruined what I had considered to be excellent steering feel in the Aero.
Naturally, the dealer claims they didn't experience anything unusual when they drove the car, so it looks like I need to figure it out myself and point them in the right direction.
My question is whether there is something in the alignement process that could be easily screwed up by the (clearly incompetent) outsourced alignment shop that would cause this feeling of looseness? Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance for your answers.
