Strange sounds/ AT transmission problems

I decided to take my 1999 9-5 wagon on a short trip out of town.
On the way I needed to stop to mail a letter. When I shifted into the Parking position, a strange loud metallic noise from under the car (engine area ?) could be heard. but It disappeared, when I shifted into D(rive) and reappeared again in N(neutral).
I then noticed that part of my electrical system was "gone" as I could not lower my windows and the turn signals did not function. I believe my daylight running lights were also off.
However, I could drive the car and its behavior appeared to be normal.
When I shut the engine off and turned ignition key to the ON position, my windows worked again.
So it was not a blown fuse.
The metallic noise is quite unnerving and signals that something is going wrong.
I do not even now what to google for. Has anyone encountered a problem similar to mine?
Any ideas and hints will be much appreciated.
Thank you, -alexs
