Might be the Neutral Safety Switch or NSS. Rowing through the gears with the shifter may help once or twice. You can check to see if this is the problem by inserting a temporary jumper between the heavy black and heavy white wire in the connection on the front side of the battery. (You will see one half of these wires going directly to the NSS on top of the automatic).
Replacing the NSS is easy. Paying the price for a replacement switch is not! Which is why some owners have installed a permanent bypass with a push-button switch to defeat the NSS while prevent accidentally starting in gear.
