This for a friend who bought a '04' with a 2.3 engine. Beautiful car with less than 100K. The PO had dealer paperwork that there was no compression in hole #4. The PO stated the car ran great and suddenly ran bad. They took it to a shop immediately. Got a diagnosis and parked the car. The friend pulled the #4 piston and it was in pieces but there were no marks on the cylinder walls. He spent months trying get a new piston to no avail. Finally got a used piston from a very reliable indie in the northwest. Piston and new rings went in. Car ran beautifully. Compression was 195 on all 4 holes. 2K miles later suddenly low compression on #4. Car runs bad. CE light on. Any thoughts on what might be the cause?
