I have stage II in an 03 Aero. I think that it is too much torque for most tires. You will need very high performance tires with stage II. When hitting the throttle at low speed, traction control panics the ECU and I was getting what felt like fuel cuts. * I had performance tires, but they were not good enough.
With more torque: Don't boost an engine that feels weak or worn. Use better motor oil. Suggest Mobil 1 5-40 Truck and Bus heavy duty diesel engine oil. Many have used that in Saab's for over 15 years.
Octane is more of an issue.
You need the Diesel spec air filter and the diesel spec snorkel. Need BCPR6ES plugs as well, perhaps with a tighter gap.
Clean injectors with Techron Concentrate. There are different Techron products, read the label for 'Concentrate'.
Replacing the ECU: I pulled the wiper arms and needed to purchase a tool to get them off. The are very tight if never removed before. Others bend the cowel up and I did not want to risk breaking that. You will need a 6" extension to remove fasteners that are deep in the ECU well and if they go astray the fasteners can drop down behind the dash and you would then need to pull the panel under the glove box and perhaps the glove box too.
When you order they want a pix of the VIN. There is a VIN sticker on the driver's door that is easy to photograph. I elected to get a modified ECU and I have the original stored.
For occasional short blasts around town, you are not going to run into thermal problems. Cruising on the highway is not a factor at all.
* We had 03 and 04 Aero wagons. We needed a more comfortable cruiser and replaced the 04 with a BMW 535 diesel all wheel drive [Xdrive]. There is 413 ft-lb of torque at low RPM and with xDrive connecting that torque to the pavement there is never any struggle even with all-season tires. [I recently got used BMW wheels and high performance tires for non-winter months.] There is a limit to what you can do with front wheel drive.
