Well, I decided to reuse the old round wire lock rings. I did straighten out the ends a bit with a hammer after slipping the rings over an ersatz mandrel: a suitably sized socket.
On reinstallation, I finally got the passenger side inner spline to seat inside the intermediate shaft bore after three attempts. So it's locked in place. Although I hope that driveshaft never has to be removed again under my ownership, I hope that it will not jam on a removal operation. OBTW, I lubed the splines with Honda M-77 assembly paste.
The driver's side axle spline seated inside the transmission differential shaft bore on the first attempt.
