On my old 9-5 I installed Mintex pads, their standard model that came in the red box. Fantastic braking at the expense of rotor life. Mintex is now part of the TMD Group which includes Textar and Pagid, and the Mintex line is no longer carried in the US.
I replaced the Akebono rear pads on my '08 9-5 with Textar pads and there was a noticeable overall improvement in braking. Still not as good as with Mintex on all four corners. I will be installing Textars on the front in the Spring and am hoping for an even bigger improvement.
I posted about this previously and at least one Independent Saab Tech stated they only use Textar, for the reason you and I both noted.
OTOH: The Akebonos on my wife's 9-3SC seem to be fine.
