Well, after years and years of wrenching and using what you have learned through the years, I don't use torque specs very much except head bolts and bearing caps and such.
I know that I have to run the studs quite hard in there so that the shoulder of the stud deforms the threads in the head. Yes, a pain when they has to be removed again a second time but I have a technique for that too.
I have a special stud socket that grabs the shoulder of the long stud and you can remove or tighten i with that when turbo bypass valve and tube is removed together with heat shield.
I can even sneak it on that last hidden stud without removing the power steering pump and get it out and in unless it is already broken.
When I do a water pump I usually throw in a 4 long stud replacement for a very reduced price as long as I can get them out without breakage and if one of the 3 good ones is broken, I can sometimes drill it out through the manifold hole and get a new one in and torque down the gasket again.
That will keep it going for awhile longer without having to replace the gasket.
Yes, always remove and discard old ones if you can get them out. Don't ever try to retorque an old one with unknown history. You might only have one shot at it.
