What engines were offered in '99, paired with what hp's?
2.3L low pressure turbo inline 4 - 170HP
3.0L assymetrical turbo V6 - 200HP
Aero 2.3L High pressure turbo inline 4 230HP,
was not offered until 2000.
Was the SE offered in both the V-6 and the 4 cyl turbo?
YES
Any problems with the '99?
ECU (engine computer) had problems with rubber mounts - recall fixed it.
minor problems with gas tank "thumping" fixed with recall.
some problems with ACC (climate control) replaced if faulty.
very reliable overall.
Any advantages to the V-6/4 cyl engine? I know there are plenty of people who feel strongly both ways on this.
I4 has timing chain, V6 has a belt that can break
I4 has better gas mileage (3-4 MPG better)
I4 is quieter at speed and on acceleration
I4 can be tuned to 220HP with aftermarket ECU
V6 has slightly better acceleration in stock form
V6 is smoother at idle
V6 is heavier and tends to give the car a heavy nose during cornering
V6 is a GM engine, I4 is a Saab engine
Any other thoughts on the 1999 model 9-5's?
I love mine. Get the 4-cyl it will run forever. If you want more HP, get the Nordic ECU/exhaust package (http://www.saabtuning.com) and you'll have 240HP for about $1800 more.
Thanks for all your help. Feel free to email me or respond here
