When I did one of the rear hubs on our '04 I had to use something called a "mid-deep" socket. The typical deep ones were too long and we ran into shock clearance issues as you'd stated. The mid-deep socket was necessary for the second set of forward mounted nuts. I had to replace the hub not due to noise (bearing failure) but to loss of the ABS sensor that's mounted to and integral with the hub.
I recall pulling off the hub with the drum (emergency) brake assembly even though the WIS says NOT to do that. We did assembly of the brake and hub on the bench and then fitted it back to the car. Getting the brake cable back onto it's actuating arm on the backing plate was a little fiddly.
