Tested that hypothesis in my '99 9-5 2.3 automatic. I used 87 for a three full tanks and 87 for three full tanks. There was essentially no change in mpg. The only difference was a very slight amount of knocking under a few specialized circumstances with the 87 octane. Can't tell if it is worth the $0.20 per gallon, or $3.50 per fill up, difference in price.
