Screw Thread InsertSTI) taps are necessary for the proper fit of most thread inserts. I believe they have a slightly different diameter and have a different shaped cut to fit the shape of the insert wire. Helical would have you believe they are proprietary but they are not-just hard to find generically at the box store. A standard tap will not likely provide as secure fastening There are a couple of different insert products that do use standard taps sizes but I don't remember the brand name at the moment.
