I've always understood that the higher octane gas allowed for higher compression ratios before detonation, but that if you didn't need the higher octane for detonation purposes, there was no benefit.
Although in a Saab, Trionic Engine Management allows the engine to take advantage of higher octane in higher performance situations, your description of the 2-4 mile trips doesn't fit this model and so there is no benefit to premium gas.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.
Unless someone can offer me more proof than the guy who sells gas line demagnetizers. Even these guys can promise a 10-20% increase.
