short version:
Finally had a chance to perform proper WIS test and discovered that the car draws at least 2.2A for *up to 18 minutes* before dropping down to 45mA after 25 minutes. Breaking the meter/battery connection drops it to 10mA. My conclusion is that when the car is off for less than 20 minutes at a time, the battery slowly draws down and short trips don't allow enough time for the charging system to replenish the battery. I do not have any reason to believe that the battery, battery cable, ignition switch or starter have anything to do with my issues.
My temporary solution is to remove fuse 17 at every stop and to periodically charge the battery and have not had a problem since then. I still need to test the alternator to see if there is a bad diode. If that tests OK, then I will start pulling fuses again to see if I can determine where the 2+A draw is coming from and see if I can replicate the results on my 2004.
