It's better to start at the front of engine which is where the belt is (unless the new 6 cyl Volvo engine) and that's where cylinder number one is on the 4 cyl engine.
Also, on V6 engines, the cylinder number 1 and bank one is found toward firewall of car.
And to mess with you, the old Saab 99/900 had the belts in the back of engine compartment which is the front of the engine. So cylinder #1 would be toward the firewall on those cars.
