The coolant by-pass valve shuts the hot water flow to the heater when the ACC is set to"LO" setting. I bet you don't set it to LO very much.
The recirc motor will not give you any code.
I bet your refrigerant is low.
If you touch the low side aluminum line it should be cold.
If you have access to a Tech 2 it will tell you the refrigerant pressure in the system.
You have to fill the system by weight of refrigerant. One of those auto store bottles may get you going, but might just leak out.....OR you can put too much in the system and blow the compressor.
Have a pro do it if you don't have experience.
