Trip would start with the temperature sensor at or slightly below the 9 o'clock position. Ten miles later the gage would instantly drop like a rock to the 6 o'clock position. this happened for two days straight.
I replaced the temperature sensor and the problem disappeared (knock on wood). It has been 2-1/2 weeks without another occurrence and 75 miles daily commutes. I have a new thermostat in my parts cabinet but that is a job for a warmer day - unless it goes bad before Spring. I also noticed while removing the sensor that the seals internal to the senor were weeping. Coolant was weeping out of the sensor body itself, not at the sensor to block threaded fitting.
Have you changed your Temp Sensor yet? I would be surprised if a bad thermostat would result in an instantaneous drop of the temp gage from mid-range to zero. I would expect a slower drop while the engine mass cooled with the higher flow of coolant.
