So I finally got out to the car on a warm-ish evening to see what could be the reason my left side (60%) seatback seemed welded in the latched position in my 2002 Aero Kombi.
To recap, I had to install the roll-up cargo net in a bit of haste last November, and was not able to immediately fit the seat back carpet nor the plastic cover for the latch. I did what I needed to do, returning with a carload of stuff, the back seat folded flat, and the cargo net rolled out to the roof.
After unloading, i flipped the back seat up, and thought nothing of it for a bit, until I wanted to install the carpet and plastic cover. At this point, the left seat back will not budge.
Now, with the cargo net cassette installed to the left seatback, one must flip down the right seatback first. Made sure I was doing that, and still the left seatback was immobile.
I finally took a long careful look at it, and a long careful look at WIS to see what I could learn.
What isn't obvious is there are two latches. One at the C pillar, and one on the inboard side of the seat. In a sedan, that latch is up top at the parcel shelf, but since the Kombi parcel shelf is removable, that won't work. So, the second latch is on the floor, part of the hinges. It is operated by a small cable (think bicycle brakes, but thinner) by the pillar latch handle.
Looking at the pillar latch, I could see that latch wasn't actually latched to the loop at all. The mechanism must have been tripped before I put the seatback up, so it was simply jammed in place. This prevented the cable from being pulled to unlatch the second latch.
Poking around under the right side seat, just left of the seatbelt latches, I could see a metal plate, with a round object poking through it. I grabbed a prybar, and I was able to get it in there, and unlatch the lower latch, and the seat released!
Sure enough, the pillar latch was tripped, I "opened" it with the handle, and now the seat back opens and closes as it should!
