ACC Code 8, But No Symptoms

'02 Aero, 145K. About a year ago I proactively installed an aluminum stop-arm to the driver-side blend door (the original plastic arm looked perfect when I removed it). Everything went well. Forward to two days ago. I started the car in the afternoon and the AC seemed to be slow cooling down (actually, not really engaging) in spite of it being an unusually warm day. So, without waiting I re-calibrated. Error code 8 came up at the conclusion of the calibration, however, the AC resumed acting normally.
I repeated the re-calibration two or three times through the course of the day but the results were the same. Error code 8 but not discernible problems.
Today I took it apart expecting to find something wrong, but no. Stop-arm was firmly attached to the stepper-motor and no broken blend door shaft. ????
Anyone have a similar experience? Thoughts? Speculation? Tomorrow I'll open up the passenger-side and take a look but for now I'm puzzled.
