I have had a life long amateur interest in automotive engineering especially with respect to safety. The only car I purchased new was a 1987 Volvo 240 which was one of the safest cars of its era. I periodically look at real world crashes on the internet and see how cars behave with a particular interest in the Saab 9-5 now. These linked photos were particularly interesting because they clearly show how well the crumple zone performed to absorb the energy of the collision and how well the safety cage prevented intrusion into the rear passenger space. Very well done Saab! Ironically, the Saab probably also helped save the driver of the Audi from serious injury who apparently not only walked but ran away! That said, we are still at risk of death or injury every time we turn on the key (located safely away from your knee) but its nice to know that we have some of the best safety engineering on our side. It's nice to see some continuing validation of the old Swedish Insurance Agency statistics that ranked the 9-5 the safest sedan in Sweden for several years in a row.
