You're correct, Dave, it can last a long time ! There are multiple brands now, but Home Depot carries the original (black) at a very low price.
Its a solvent-born vinyl, and while it will never be give you a wonderfully smooth glossy surface, it's great for black trim applications! If you use it on something like a chromed grill you want to black out, you will still be able to remove it later (with some effort). But because of its flexibility it can take a lot of minor abuse and be pretty durable.
When you use it, plan on 3 coats or more to get a good coverage. The first coat will be very blotchy with a lot of show-through. Let it dry well, and the 2nd coat may almost be enough. But if you want more durability and a uniform look, go for 3 coats.
I most recently used it on my truck grill inserts (way too much chrome) while I decide whether to change them out or not. It's lasted the whole winter with washes and no noticeable loss of coverage - and I stopped at 2 coats.
