I think the only time I repaired the vent was by replacing the entire rear assy, vent, APO, seat heater et al. But looking at a spare one I have, there appears to be only two screws. the vent assy seems to snap into place on the bottom opposite the screws. This was maybe easier when one is assembling but disassembly would be riskier as you have surmised. The thumb wheels or vent might crack. That said, Saab plastics are generally quite good but I don't think they originally thought the vent itself would be a routine service item. Unfortunately, it appears to have an unusually high failure rate on older cars and I don't know the root cause - I vaguely recall a small piece of plastic breaks. Hope my gratuitous advice helps a bit.
