Bernard,

It sure as heck sounds like pinging..... I can't imagine what else it would be (and i've owned some old carbureted cars that pinged a lot, so I'm familiar w/ the sound).

I understand that Trionic should be retarding the ignition or richening the fuel mixture or whatever it does to stop this....but I'm hearing something.

It usually occurs when accelerating under some load (like up a moderate hill) from lower RPMs. It's not like just one or two pings and then it goes away, but lasts for multiple seconds. When the RPMs get higher and the throttle is opened more, I no longer hear it -- not sure if its going away or if the engine/induction/turbo noise is just louder.

Probably half of the miles, and 80% of the time, the car is driven are in southern california traffic, when my wife commutes, and she probably averages 20 mph in stop and go situations. It is an auto...and it probably doesn't exceed 3k RPM when she is driving, though I tend to do the "Italian tuneup" when I am driving the car...but perhaps for not enough distance.

When I had the 30k mile service, I complained about this, the dealer told me that the O2 sensor was dirty, cleaned it, and the problem lessened. Now that I'm within a month of hitting 50k miles, it's back again and quite noticeable.

I figure I would try some fuel system cleaner now, and see if that helps before it goes into the shop.

Someone said that the CPU retains some data about pings that can be read in Tech II. I got the impression that this wasn't a persistent or cumulative measurment, just for the previous driving session. If so, I'm going to have to find some hills before I bring it in for service, as the route there is all downhill on a fast freeway :)

Thanks

Pat
