My DI failed last February (~77K miles). I coasted off the main road and called a flat bed. When it arrived, I turned the ingition to shift into neutral (did not start the car) to allow the car to be towed onto the bed. Smoke started to spew from the engine. At first I didn't know what was up, as it hadn't been smoking for the 45 minutes I waited for the truck. Turned off the ignition and it stopped.
Unfortunately had to do that a couple more short bits to finish getting the car on the truck and again off at the shop.
My mechanic said that there is an oil jacket around the plug area in the DI. One or more must have cracked when the DI failed. Turning the ignition supplied an electrical current that created the smoke. It would have been a fire had we not turned it off fairly quickly.
