Hi Dave
My 02 Aero Auto used to do that too....It was so bad I used to shift to Neutral when stooped in traffic.
I took the Aero back to the dealer here in the UK to get the transmission looked at (indecisive changes/forgetting to change down problems) and they re-programmed the 'box - its been perfect ever since - I'm just coming up on 5000 miles.
Their senior tech - told me its done like this:
1) They connect the Portable SaabPC(TechII??) to the Aero - select the transmission software - down-load the current software.
2) Take the Portable SaabPC to the WorkshopPC that is connected to Saab directly - the WorkshopPC compared the software that my Aero was using with whatever is the latest release - if its different then the updated version is uploaded to the Portable and thus used to refresh the Aero's program.
3) There are no 'parts' used in the process - its all 'soft'.
Its worth checking with your dealer - It made a big difference to mine - its noticeably brisker - and the Drive vibration has gone when stooped.
I can't help wondering though if the 5spd auto is a bit of a lemon though - 2002 is the only year that had that setup - 2003 has the Sentronic...........
