Alternator cable nut ideas?

I have to say I'm feeling pretty stupid here but I am trying to R and R my alternator on my '05 but cannot get a wrench or socket around the nut for the battery cable in order to get it off.
I have actually done this job years ago on a 2000 and did NOT have this problem.
What happens is - going from top or underneath - that the wrench/socket are prevented from going on to the nut by the wire joining in to the nut.
I have the small one off (neg?) and all the alternator bolts out and this larger cable is the last step before, hopefully, removal.
Any ideas? Couldn't find anything on the board for this.
What am I missing? Access to it is difficult and seems far worse this time around.
Input would be really appreciated.
