If you apply voltage to the purge valve in rapid fashion, like dragging the wire over the battery post, so that the valve clicks like crazy and also heat it up with a paint gun, you might be able to make it fail if the valve is the culprit.
Sometimes it hangs open, sometimes it refuses to open. You can sometimes hear the distinct clicking fading away and stop.
They usually fail when hot. That's why I can run a quick EVAP test with my Tech2 many times when the car is in the shop and then it still set the P0455 later on. By running the quick test, I at least know the rest of the system is healthy.
Very rarely to never does the EVAP shut off valve valve.
