I hear you, Mike.
I had a belt slip off on the '06, when inclement weather came up as I was finishing some routine maintenance. I didn't get the tensioner on there right, and the belt was not aligning properly. And this can easily cause a belt to slip off. And that belt got chafed up a little and was assigned backup status.
I would look at the water pump. I have replaced a water pump at 230,000 on one of mine - strictly preventative. Some thing about the American South, is pretty easy on coolant and pumps if maintained well. Got 2 others (plus a NG 900) with 200,000 miles plus and still the original pump. Of course the other possibility is the O.P. kept driving and blew something in the cooling system (head gasket?)during an interval when the pump wasn't able to do its job.
