I just did mine on my 2001, back in the spring. Mine had a very slow drip (just a few drops each night) and managed to last me 20 yrs (close to 300k miles). With that in mind, I stuck with the OEM replacement, as I didn't want to have to deal with any issues due to a subpar part.
There are some parts I won't hesitate to go aftermarket with, but others, like a water pump, I'm not sure it pays to roll the dice. It's far too labor intensive to go back in and replace, if the part fails prematurely. Between removing everything to get at it, then cleaning up the gasket surface, reinstalling everything, draining /replacing the coolant, cleaning up your tools, etc.. it easily turns into a 4 or 5 hour job.. unless you have previous experience replacing it.
I am not sure now good some of the aftermarket parts are.. but there are sure some cheap options out there... Hopefully others will weigh in on their experiences..
Good Luck
Mike
