They sound like the ones in my wife’s 2011 GMC Terrain. If they are, they are very tight snap ons. The ‘button’ in the center is the post that is attached to the underlying carpet. The ring around them is attached to the mat and they snap together.
To remove the mat, you can reach under the mat, hold the carpet down and pull up on the mat near the plastic fittings.
