More Observations on Oil Filler Leaks Posted by FredKolb12 [Email] (#46) [Profile/Gallery] (more from FredKolb12) on Thu, 16 Dec 2021 09:44:25 In Reply to: Update: fixed!, fdw201 [Profile/Gallery] , Thu, 16 Dec 2021 06:10:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
1. Glad you've got this solved. I'd advise to not beat your yourself up on issues ('always guessing wrong'). Most of us owners on the board are NOT SAAB-trained technicians. We're learning on the fly and sometimes, even the experienced techs are stumped for a while. We have to expect some speed bumps in the learning process of keeping our cars maintained, running, and safe. It's your persistence in figuring out the issues that's most important.
2. I've had seepage around the seal of the oil filler cap/separator (and from both their o-rings) when my PCV system was not working properly. I got a new cap gasket, but that resulted in more seepage from the filler neck to valve cover junction. I have a new filler/separator, but have not figured out how to remove the old one. I may have to cut it out someday as it does not seem to "unscrew."
3. I don't think any blow-by gasses got past the oil filler or cap o-rings unless the cap and filler gaskets are really bad. There is always oil splashed up there so vapor coming by them is really unlikely (IMO).
4. A rubber glove over the filler neck (without the cap) can confirm if your PCV is working right. It will get sucked down a bit. If it inflates, then there's a blockage in the vacuum lines and excessive crankcase blow-by pressure. The manifold vacuum on mine runs around 20-22 inches. I got a gauge from H Freight on sale.
5. Don't recall if you replaced your vacuum lines. Silicone hoses (4mm) work well and are not expensive and they look better than rubber and may be more heat tolerant. Not only did mine start to break down and rub off on fingers, but also, the ends began to split allowing leaks.
Good Luck. (and more kudos on success)
