I'd replace the pan, with a new one.
I cannot think of a more certain way of messing up one of these motors, than to have a plug repair go wrong, and the contents of the crankcase are lost to the pavement. Besides, while you're in there you can clean out the rubbish in there and clean the screen as well.
If I had to stay with the existing pan, I think I would get an oversized plug and matching tap - drill out the hole with a stepped bit of the recommended size for that new plug, then tap yourself some fresh new threads.
I never did drop the pan on my 9000 (Hurricane Katrina got it first) but it appears to me, quite similar as I recall. Be careful when you elevate the motor, not to harm the power steering tubing. We're lucky down this way - exhaust bolts don't get frozen bad down here. Once the exhaust is out of the way, lots of access I think.
