9-5 '01 Aero Auto Wagon DEAD (Intermittent) Ignition Switch??

Hi guys,
First time poster here hoping for some much needed clues to get my Aero Wagon running reliably again.
This is my second Saab and purchased it about 1 mth ago with 170,000km on it. Last week this happened;
- Went to start it in morning. Dash lights seemed good but starter just clacked like it's a flat
battery.
- turned key again. Dash lights on but faded down to nothing quickly.
- turned key again. DEAD. I mean no electrics...nothing. No cranking; not one light on anywhere; no
radio; key fob not working; Zip.
- Battery is new...double checked and all healthy.
- Checked maxi fuses etc...all good.
I left the car for a day or so due to work then returned to try it...started up fine.
Did some running around over the next few days without issue. Parked at shops today then returned to find exactly the same problem again...utterly dead...central locking, everything. I will go back to the car(still at shops) later today to see if it has rested enough and decides to start.
Given that this issue seems to cut power to absolutely everything, I'm thinking perhaps it's the ignition switch (not the key barrel but the switch). Does this sound likely?
If it is the ignition switch would that also cause the key fob to be inactive when the problem is present?
Alternatively, could a faulty TWICE cause this total cut to all power (including key fob/ central locking)
So far I've removed the rubber ignition barrel shroud and tried giving the top of the barrel a good knock with a hammer but if it's the switch that's faulty it still didn't do the trick.
The car has a new battery and new crank sensor and isn't in an extreme climate.
If any members have experience with something like this or some helpful advice I'd be very grateful!
