I’m no transmission expert, but with driving 9-5s for over 24 years now I trust their longevity with proper maintenance. SWEDECAR’s advice about the valve body makes a lot of sense. Maybe get the used transmission and have a good transmission shop switch the valve body, or the whole transmission, if they think so. Sure beats car payments if the car is otherwise in good shape. And don’t overlook the comment about the engine mounts. If your mounts haven’t been replaced they are way overdue. Worn mounts will cause the engine to shift a lot when going into gear, and the engine will also be sitting too low by an inch or two. There is a mushroom shaped black thing on the right side engine mount you can easily see. You should be able to stick a finger under the mushroom if it is good. It’s a crude test but an easy way to start checking engine mounts. Good luck with the 9-5.
