I agree with SwedeCar (Anders). This sounds like classic T-stat failure.

I've found that I'm not surprised if a T-stat only lasts about two years. :o( At least they are not hard to replace. I just did mine a few weeks ago. Same exact symptoms. It's more noticeable in the cooler weather because the car takes FOREVER to warm up the coolant (if it ever does).

One other thing I've noticed, is that MPGs drop with an open T-stat. I saw mine go up 5-10% with the proper coolant temps!

I was prepping my Saab for sale (Classified ad coming very soon) and thought I had finished everything I wanted to take care of, when the temp gauge started to not climb, then drop out as the computer wasn't liking what it was getting.

Hey, at least they fail open, rather than closed, right!?
