The noise is indeed the a/c expansion valve "groan". I get it consistently in my 2002 Linear 9-5 SportWagon. BB posts talk about having it replaced with mixed results. Todd at BRI Imports said replacements were making the same noise so "don't bother". He didn't indicate a fix in the works but I figured one must be.
With 3.5 more years of warranty, I'm ok to wait. The groan seems to simply be the car doing its job...
Speaking of the a/c, the climate control is fantastic. Press in a number and let it do the rest. I had the car on Interstate 5, southern San Joaquin Valley in the midst of a heat wave a month ago. The SID read 107 degrees outside at 7pm. Meanwhile, inside the comfy cabin, I had to up the temp to 72 -- it was getting a little too chilly!
Awesome car. Road trips really show its stuff.
